The founder, Mr. Karun Moodley established the business in 1994 after being retrenched. Global Bags started as a training centre for the unemployed, unskilled workers as an initiative by The Department of Labour in sewing and screen printing. One of the key challenges though was to find employment for the trainees in the formal sector. Mr. Moodley, who has experience in the manufacturing industry, then indentified a niche market for custom made branded bags which resulted in the creation of Global Bags. As demand for Global Bags’ products increased it became important to ensure that their business employed the best practices in manufacturing. The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) was contracted to implement an intensive quality management programme and this certification opened opportunities with other public sector organizations such as Armscor, the South African Navy, South African Police Force & Department of Education. Global Bags emerged into the private sector and today is entrusted with large corporate brands such as KFC, MTN Cellular, ABSA, Nedbank and Unilever. Travel agencies such as the Sure Travel Group, Harvey World Travel and Flight Centre are using Global Bags as their preferred supplier of branded travel accessories. Global Bags supply their products locally & internationally. Due to the excellent service that their clients have received, Global Bags were requested to start manufacturing sportswear and school apparel as there were not many reputable, reliant, service orientated manufacturers around. Global Bags introduced state of the art technology which ensures quality service and products. Amongst the new technologies are Automated Embroidered machines, Digital Printers/Cutters and SABS Pattern grading plotter/printers which ensure accurate patterns for all bags and sportswear. Today Global Bags is an established black owned, managed and controlled business employing over 120 employees and has a verified Level 1 BBBEE rating.
