EV Charger Installer by evci

EV Charger Installation Electrician Cape Town - EVCI Thinking about installing an EV charger at your Cape Town home or business? The real challenge is not the wall box itself, but whether your Cape Town DB board has enough capacity. In Cape Town households, most DBs are 60A single phase, sometimes 80A, and a few are three phase 60A. Evening peak demand is usually 35–45A, so adding a 32A charger requires smart load management. A simple solution: switch the geyser off while charging — it frees up capacity at night when hot water isn’t in use. Modern smart chargers can throttle between 3kW–7kW, keeping supply stable in Cape Town homes. Cable runs matter: if your DB is in the garage, installation is straightforward; if it’s in the kitchen, routing can be more complex. For safety, a dedicated earth leakage and circuit breaker is always installed. The charger must run independently from the house ELU, which is often incorrectly rated. Portable chargers (3.5kW) are slow but generally fine for PHEVs with smaller batteries. Nonetheless, always use a dedicated 16A circuit for continuous charging loads. Sharing the charger circuit is never a good idea. A typical install takes less than a day -- longer if solar integration or DB upgrades are needed. ⚡ Important for Cape Town residents: All EV charger work must be done by a licensed electrician with a supplementary CoC issued to SANS 10142. This ensures compliance, safety, and protects your vehicle warranty. Do not use unqualified or unregistered electricians for EV wall box charger installations. These are high-power circuits that are continuous for many hours during charge.
