MPI chemicals assist in the detection of cracks and flaws in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel and cobalt. A magnetic field is placed into the part which is then magnetized directly or indirectly. For direct magnetization, an electric current is passed through the test object and a magnetic field is formed in the material. For an indirect magnetization, the magnetic field is applied from outside the source and no electric current is passed through. Magnetic flux will leak in the presence of a crack or flaw in the material and MPI chemicals are applied. Attracted to a crack or flaw in the material, this will give an indication of where the problem is and it can then be further evaluated.
