Meerkat was founded by David O'Brien in 2016. Frustrated with the low savings rate in South Africa he set out to make financial products more accessible to consumers.
As a registered debt counsellor (NCRDC2613), Meerkat opened their doors offering debt management solutions to over-indebted South Africans. This was then followed with affordable credit life insurance to replace the multiple policies a consumer would have across their loans. Meerkat then developed their own funeral plan, underwritten by Old Mutual Alternative Risk Transfer Limited, offering cover from as little as R45pm. The application can all be done online with just the click of a button.

The latest product offering is the simple savings plan. Clients can start saving from as little as R25 per month and have full flexibility when it comes to withdrawing their money. There are no fees or penalties and can earn interest of CPI +1%. As part of the savings plan clients are entered into a prize draw with the chance to win a monthly prize of R1000 back into their savings account. If savings clients refer a friend to start saving, they get an extra ticket into the prize draw and the friend is also entered. That's the benefit of friendship!

Meerkat also offer a browser based app providing an overview of a users financial position. It details debt repayments, budgeting information, credit score and affordability calculations. You can also get a free credit report with Meerkat.
Whilst Meerkat is based in Cape Town they service nationally and the digital infrastructure provides a reduction in overheads resulting in distribution cost savings being passed back to clients.
